SJW was born in 2013 from a very simple realisation: this wasn’t the life we wanted our family to have.

At the time, I was commuting daily from Leyburn to Harrogate — long hours, endless travelling — while our son was just nine years old. I’d built a career in financial software as a support manager and business consultant, implementing and supporting accounting systems, and before that worked as a management accountant. I loved the work, but something had to give.

So, I took the leap.

From our base in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, I started with a handful of small clients and a very clear idea of the kind of business I wanted to build — one where the work was excellent, but so was the life around it.

More than a decade later, what started as just me has grown into a team of eight, supporting businesses across North Yorkshire and beyond.

The name SJW has been with us since the beginning, and when people started telling us it had become a brand in itself, we knew it was here to stay.

What did change was the rest of it.

SJW Business Solutions became SJW Accountancy & Bookkeeping because, quite simply, it says exactly what we do. We’re accountants. Proud ones. Based at Thornborough Hall in Leyburn — and very happy about it.

What hasn’t changed since day one is why we exist: to give business owners the kind of financial expertise and support that genuinely makes life easier.

Because that’s exactly what I was looking for when I started out.
